If you need to replace night latch on your front door, it’s usually because the key has stopped turning smoothly, the latch won’t retract, or the cylinder has worn out. Night latches are commonly found on timber doors across London, especially on older properties.
The cylinder at the front of the door is a small rim cylinder where the key is inserted. Inside, the lock body is surface mounted. To replace night latch cylinder properly, we remove the internal case first to access the external barrel. The new rim cylinder is always installed from the outside, with the logo at the top and the keyhole correctly aligned.
When replacing a night latch cylinder, we work with the door open to avoid accidentally locking it shut. Most of the work is carried out from the inside, where the screws secure the cylinder and internal mechanism.

A standard night latch is mounted directly on the inside surface of a door that opens inwards. It’s often referred to as a Yale lock, though Yale is just one brand.
When the door is closed, the latch automatically locks into the strike plate on the door frame. Standard night latch models can be opened from inside with a thumb turn. Deadlocking night latches add extra security, preventing the latch being pushed back with a card. An auto deadlocking night latch automatically engages when the door is shut and requires a key to unlock from outside.
There are three main styles. Standard night latch. Deadlocking night latches. And auto deadlocking night latch models approved to british standard BS3621. For most London homes, insurance requires british standard rated door locks.
Night latch installation requires accuracy. They are available in two sizes, 40mm backset and 60mm backset. The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the keyhole. If replacing the entire unit, we check whether a 40mm or 60mm backset is needed to accommodate the existing hole.
If drilling a new hole, it should be around 32mm. Just large enough for a snug fit. The hole drilled must be straight and clean, otherwise the cylinder won’t sit flush.
The latch and strike plate must line up perfectly at the correct distance and angle. If misaligned, the latch can stick in the open position or fail to retract when the key is turned. Good chisels are needed to create a clean recess in the door frame for the strike plate.
A typical night latch installation takes around 30 minutes when done properly.
To replace night latch cylinder, we unscrew the internal lock body and remove it from the door surface. From there, we release the old rim cylinder.
The new cylinder is fitted from the outside. The tailpiece must be positioned horizontally when refitting the case so it engages the internal mechanism the same way as the original. We compare the new tailpiece with the old one. If it’s too long, it’s cut down using a hacksaw and heavy duty pliers to match the required length.
Common tools include a Posidriv screwdriver, flathead screwdriver, hacksaw, tape measure and pencil.
We never overtighten the retaining screws. If you compress the cylinder body, the key may struggle to turn.
Before closing the door, we always test the key from both sides. Once the door is closed, mistakes become expensive.
Replacement cylinders can start from around £45, so in many cases you can save money by changing just the cylinder instead of the full lock.

Night latches can malfunction through dirt build up or internal failure. If the key won’t turn, cleaning and lubricating the cylinder may solve it. Debris inside the keyhole is common in London properties.
If the cylinder turns but the latch doesn’t move, the tailpiece may have broken. That usually means replacement.
If the latch will not retract, the strike plate may be misaligned. Timber doors move over time. Hinges drop. The latch hits the frame at the wrong centre line and jams.
If the latch is stuck in the open position, the internal spring may have failed.
If a night latch isn’t functioning, it should be fixed quickly. It’s a secondary security device, but it plays a big role in keeping your home secure at night.
